Engineered Timber Connectors for High-Strength Face-Mounted Applications

The Simpson Strong-Tie SAE and SAI series are heavy-duty face fix joist hangers, designed for demanding applications where enhanced strength, stability, and code compliance are essential. Suitable for solid sawn timber, engineered joists, and purlins, these hangers are ideal for large-span structural frameworks, including truss connections and girder supports.

Key Features

  • Heavy-Duty Face Fixing
SAE hangers can be fixed using square twist nails and are also pre-drilled for 12mm bolts for high-load timber-to-timber or timber-to-steel applications.

  • Lateral Stability
The hanger depth must be at least 60% of the carried member depth to prevent rotational failure—unless additional lateral restraint is installed above the joist.

  • Flexible Use with Fasteners
Fixing options include nails for timber-to-timber connections, and bolts for timber-to-steel or where structural bolting is required.

  • Material Strength
Made from pre-galvanised mild steel, providing strength and corrosion resistance in protected interior and structural environments.

  • Quick Installation
Engineered for fast and secure fitting, even in complex or constrained site conditions.

Material Specification

Property Description
Product Series SAE / SAI
Material Pre-galvanised mild steel
Fixing Options Square twist nails / M12 bolts
Fastener Capacity Varies from 8 to 38 holes (see model)
Hanger Depth Typically ≥ 60% of joist depth
Joist Compatibility Solid timber, purlins, engineered joists

Applications

  • Heavy-duty timber joist and girder support

  • Connections requiring high shear and uplift resistance

  • Roof and floor framing systems in commercial and residential buildings

  • Timber-to-timber and timber-to-steel interface zones

  • Purlin support in agricultural or industrial buildings

Installation Guidance

  1. Select appropriate model based on joist width and required load capacity.

  2. Fix to the face of the supporting member using square twist nails.

  3. If additional capacity is required or fixing into steel, use 12mm bolts through pre-drilled holes.

  4. Ensure hanger depth covers at least 60% of joist depth, or install restraint straps to the top of the carried member.

Important Notes

  • Always follow manufacturer and engineer specifications for fastener type, spacing, and load requirements.

  • Do not exceed published capacities without verified structural design.

  • For external use, additional corrosion protection or stainless steel versions may be required.

  • For partial nailing, refer to reduced capacities in Simpson Strong-Tie technical documents.
