Purpose-Built Hanger for Joist Connections to Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs)

The Simpson Strong-Tie IUQ and HIUQ Hanger Range is the industry’s first hanger system developed specifically to connect engineered timber joists to Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs). Available in standard duty (IUQ) and heavy-duty (HIUQ) versions, these hangers simplify construction, reduce thermal bridging, and ensure a strong, airtight connection—ideal for modern energy-efficient building systems.

Key Features

  • Designed for SIP Integration
Allows engineered I-joists or metal web joists to be face-fixed directly to SIP walls, eliminating the need for top-seated joists and reducing insulation breaches.

  • CSA and SSH Screws Included
The IUQ uses 4 CSA screws, and the HIUQ uses 4 SSH screws, included with each hanger to ensure optimal load performance and ease of installation.

  • Eliminates Thermal Bridging
Unlike traditional top-supported joists, this system keeps the joist off the top of the wall, significantly reducing thermal breaks at the joist/wall interface.

  • Improved Airtightness
Removes the need for timber blocking between joists and SIPs, saving time and labour while enhancing the building’s air seal performance.

  • Split-Resistant Fastening
Square twist nails can be driven at a positive angle into the joist, reducing the chance of splitting the joist’s bottom chord and ensuring a secure connection.

Benefits

  • Energy-Efficient Detailing
Helps meet airtightness and thermal performance goals required in low-energy and passive buildings.

  • Faster Installation
Face fixing with pre-supplied screws simplifies the process—no blocking, no complicated notching or timber bridging.

  • Versatile Compatibility
Suitable for engineered I-joists and metal web joists, offering flexibility across modern timber construction systems.

  • Heavy Duty Option
HIUQ variant offers increased capacity for higher load or span requirements.

Applications

  • Engineered joist connections to SIP walls

  • Low-energy and passive house construction

  • Timber frame homes with high-performance insulation systems

  • Air-seal critical junctions in residential and light commercial builds

Installation Notes

  • Use only the supplied CSA or SSH screws for installation to ensure correct load capacity.

  • Joists should be installed flush to the face of the SIP, not seated on top.

  • For additional restraint or enhanced load paths, consult Simpson Strong-Tie technical guidelines.

Important Notes

  • Not for top-mount usethis hanger is strictly for face-fixed SIP applications.

  • Ensure SIP wall is capable of carrying the intended joist load and that fasteners are fully embedded into solid backing within the panel.

  • Square twist nails into the joist should be driven at the recommended angle to minimise splitting.
